DESCRIPTION
“Orient Your Walking” is an Erasmus+ Sport project designed to tackle sedentary lifestyles and promote environmental awareness by introducing OrientWalking, a recreational and inclusive version of Orienteering. The project invites young and older people — especially those with inactive habits — to step outside, discover rural areas, and engage in physical activity that is safe, enjoyable, and accessible to all.
By focusing on walking rather than competition, OrientWalking overcomes many common barriers to sport such as lack of fitness, fear of injury, or dislike of competitive environments. Participants navigate scenic rural routes at their own pace, reconnect with nature, and benefit physically, mentally, and socially. This intergenerational and inclusive approach fosters solidarity between people of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds while promoting healthier lifestyles.
The project combines research, education, technology, and grassroots action to build a sustainable movement. It starts with research and surveys to understand the needs and barriers faced by the target groups. Then, an OrientWalking Handbook is developed to guide trainers and organisers in planning inclusive events, and an international training program equips coaches from five countries with the knowledge and skills to deliver impactful activities.
At the heart of the project are local events held in rural areas, where hundreds of young and older participants experience OrientWalking together, learning to appreciate the environment and enjoy physical activity. To further support the community, the project develops the Orient Your Walking App, a digital platform where participants can find and share routes, connect with others, and access resources.
Through awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and a strong partnership across Europe, the project also promotes environmental sustainability, highlighting how sport can contribute to the fight against climate change by encouraging responsible, nature-friendly practices.
Ultimately, Orient Your Walking demonstrates how outdoor sport can be inclusive, accessible, and transformative — improving health, strengthening communities, and reconnecting people with the natural world.
