DESCRIPTION
“Multilanguage Summer Camps (MSC)” is an Erasmus+ Sport project that promotes social integration, inclusivity, and mutual respect among children from diverse cultural backgrounds, by combining sport, language learning, and intercultural education. The project focuses on children aged 6–12 who have recently migrated to a new country or come from migrant backgrounds, helping them overcome the challenges of adapting to a new environment, school system, and society.
At the heart of MSC is the belief that sport is a powerful and universal language capable of bridging cultural and social divides. Building on the strong evidence from academic research and European policy that sport fosters dialogue, respect, and understanding, the project integrates sporting activities with language and cultural education to create inclusive, accessible summer camps for migrant children. These camps not only improve children’s communication and social skills but also instill values of teamwork, self-esteem, and mutual respect — providing a safe space to learn, play, and grow.
MSC responds directly to the rising number of children migrating to Europe due to conflicts and economic pressures, a demographic shift that has intensified challenges of integration and inclusion. Recognizing that traditional education systems and standard summer camps often fail to address the specific needs of migrant children, MSC introduces a tailored, innovative format of summer camp designed to remove linguistic, cultural, and economic barriers.
The camps bring together children of different nationalities and ethnicities and provide them with opportunities to interact with peers and trainers from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds. Through a combination of games, sports, educational workshops, and intercultural exchanges, the children develop language proficiency, build friendships, and gain confidence to navigate their new environments.
In addition to direct work with children, MSC also strengthens the skills of sport operators and trainers through dedicated training courses and job-shadowing opportunities, enhancing their ability to deliver culturally-sensitive, inclusive, and high-quality programs. Trainers learn how to design and facilitate activities that foster social inclusion, respect diversity, and align with local school curricula to ease the children’s transition into formal education.
MSC also develops a financial accessibility plan to make camps affordable for low-income migrant families, ensuring equitable access to the benefits of the program. Throughout its activities, the project collaborates with local communities, schools, NGOs, embassies, and consulates to ensure outreach, sustainability, and cultural relevance.
Implemented by a consortium of organizations from Italy, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, MSC creates a strong European network of expertise and good practice. It embodies the EU priorities of promoting inclusion, diversity, equality, and European values through sport and education, while aligning with initiatives such as the HealthyLifestyle4All and the EU Work Plan for Sport.
By revitalizing the summer camp experience, MSC proves that sport — when integrated with language and cultural learning — can play a transformative role in helping migrant children feel welcomed, valued, and empowered in their new communities. It demonstrates how creativity, cooperation, and education can overcome barriers and foster stronger, more inclusive societies.
