“ParaEMPOWER” is an Erasmus+ Sport project that addresses the barriers faced by people with disabilities in accessing sports and society by empowering the organizations, coaches, and volunteers who support parasport. Recognizing that sport is a universal language capable of fostering inclusion, self-expression, and well-being, the project aims to build capacity in the parasport sector by equipping coaches and administrators with the knowledge, tools, and attitudes to promote inclusion and good governance in their organizations.
People with disabilities often face societal stigma, exclusion from education and employment, and limited access to recreational and sporting opportunities. This exclusion not only hinders their physical and mental health but also limits their social participation and development. ParaEMPOWER tackles these challenges by training parasport coaches to focus on athletes’ abilities rather than their disabilities and by promoting organizational practices that enhance inclusion and respect for diversity.
At its core, ParaEMPOWER builds the capacity of parasport organizations and professionals to work transnationally and across sectors. It offers innovative training through an online platform featuring educational videos, practical exercises, and research-based materials. Coaches and sport operators receive guidance on creating supportive, inclusive, and empowering environments that foster self-esteem, motivation, and personal growth for athletes with disabilities.
The project develops a comprehensive educational framework, including a manual with best practices, case studies, and capacity-building tools; an online library of short instructional videos; and interactive training courses. Through international expert meetings, national workshops, and dissemination activities, ParaEMPOWER promotes collaboration, shares knowledge, and inspires further action in the parasport sector.
By enhancing the skills of sport administrators, coaches, experts, and volunteers, ParaEMPOWER strengthens the management and impact of parasport organizations. It contributes to the objectives of the EU’s inclusion and diversity priorities, aligns with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and supports the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting equality, education, and well-being through sport.
Implemented by a consortium of organizations from Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Germany, and Serbia, ParaEMPOWER creates a sustainable network of expertise and practice. It demonstrates that inclusive sport not only improves physical health but also challenges prejudices, transforms perceptions, and empowers individuals and communities to thrive together.
